Did Mr. Obi claim to pull 439 million people out of poverty?

There have been debates on social media concerning a statement credited to Peter Obi saying he pulled 439 million people out of poverty and another 269 people out of poverty.

The claim was backed by a 17 seconds video clip being shared on social media

This claim is Misleading and Untrue, here is what we know … 

The Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi spoke at an interactive session organized by the Arewa Joint committee in Kaduna on Monday, October 17, 2022.

 

In his address, Obi referred to the use of MDG in the developmental agenda of China and India to pull 439 million and 269 million people out of poverty respectively. 

 

Using the fact search bar, it was discovered that One of the viral videos circulated only edited the part he mentioned ‘pulled 439 million people out of poverty.

 

His reference is from the United Nation’s highlight of China’s progress from 1990 to 2011 which included lifting over 490 million out of poverty and he was correct with the quote.

Conclusion

Obi never claimed to have pulled 439 million out of poverty, the claim is a misrepresentation of what was said and is therefore misleading and untrue.
