A WhatsApp broadcast credited to newsband claims that the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu and some other Nigerians are to be banned from getting United States of America Visa sequel to their roles in the 2023 elections.
The claim is false, here’s what we know
The forwarded list has about 90 other Nigerians who included the INEC chairman, governors, former governors, INEC officials amongst others.
It also said their wives, children and relatives will also be banned.
A check on the website of newsband shows that the forwarded message isn’t as published by newsband.
Newsband in a story with the headline “INEC boss, Wike, Uzodinma, MC Oluomo, INEC Commissioners, election riggers, family, relatives face US visa ban” said that a group collated the list and submitted to the US, UK and EU.
Though the authenticity of the group or the list cannot be confirmed, we can confirm that newsband did not report that they have been banned.
Conclusion
The claim that the US has placed a visa ban on INEC chairman and some other Nigerians as a result of the election is FALSE.
